Miranda Meyer of Real Functional Healing on Reprogramming the Body and Brain Without Burnout

Miranda Meyer is a neuronutrition coach, functional medicine practitioner, and founder of Real Functional Healing, where she helps high-performing women overcome overwhelm, anxiety, brain fog, and ADHD by addressing the root causes of their health challenges. With over 15 years of experience in functional nutrition, her work focuses on simplifying complex health issues and guiding clients toward restored energy, clarity, and resilience through a deeper understanding of the gut-brain connection.

Please share a brief introduction and your business:

I’m Miranda Meyer, Neuronutrition Coach, functional medicine practitioner, and founder of Real Functional Healing. I help driven, high-performing women struggling with overwhelm, anxiety, brain fog, and ADHD reprogram their body and brain without burnout. Together, we restore energy, focus, and resilience through identifying the root causes affecting their brain, nervous system, hormones, and metabolism. After more than 15 years in functional nutrition, my work focuses on simplifying complex health challenges and helping clients move from overwhelm to clear, strategic solutions for their health.

Take us back to when you launched? What was your marketing strategy?

I had zero marketing strategy! I assumed that I would build a website, tell people about my business, and the clients would simply appear. Turns out, it's not quite that easy. Working with a business coach and joining professional networking groups equipped me with the skills I needed to effectively promote and market my business, but those things took me years to master.

Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Absolutely not! As a young adult, I never dreamt of starting a business. I watched the struggles my parents went through as small business owners, and for a long time, my thoughts around business ownership were: "I'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole."

In a way, I'm thankful that past employers refused to pay me what I was worth or provide a more sustainable approach to work-life balance. I burnt out so hard that I almost quit my industry entirely. Eventually, I realized this type of work was my passion, but I needed to approach it in a way that was sustainable for me if I was going to make it a life long career.

What accomplishments are you the most proud of to date in your business?

What I’m most proud of in my business is the trust my clients place in me during some of the most challenging periods of their lives. Many of them arrive feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure why they’re struggling despite doing so many things “right.” Being able to help them make sense of their symptoms, create a clear strategy, and watch them regain energy, clarity, and confidence is the most rewarding part of my work. Seeing that transformation, both physically and mentally, is what keeps me deeply committed to this field.

What is one thing you wish you had known when you started your Entreprenista journey?

I just wish I had been introduced to the group sooner!

When hiring, what is your go-to interview question?

"Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses." I value introspection and awareness, and think this question reveals a lot.

What did you do before starting your own business?

My original degree was in Psychology and I graduated from a two year program in holistic nutrition a few years later. This combination sparked my original interest in the mind-body connection, and I pursued post graduate jobs that took me deeper into my studies.

Before starting my practice, I worked in various healthcare positions. I was a physical therapy aide, Doctor's assistant, and ran the nutrition program for a busy functional neurology clinic here in Denver. I also spent 3 years as the health and wellness coordinator for an outpatient addiction program, supporting newly sober patients in their recovery from alcohol abuse.

Through these positions, I learned a tremendous amount about the gut-brain connection. I observed how our thoughts and emotions created changes in the gut, and how gut health influenced brain chemistry, and conditions like ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I found I was most passionate about this particular area of health, likely due to my own past struggles with ADHD and mental health and their effects on my personal and professional life.

Today, I'm passionate about passing along the knowledge that changed my life to others. I love supporting women on their journey back to health, helping them feel more energized, more clear-minded, happier, and more like themselves!

What made you take the leap to start your own business?

I was tired of being overworked and underpaid, watching the Doctors I worked under see half the patients and make twice the money. I was burnt out and exhausted, seeing more patients in one day than I often do in a week these days!

When I left the busy functional medicine practice I'd been at for a few years, I decided to go out on my own and started my LLC. I spent years floundering. I felt directionless, I didn't have the knowledge or the coaching and I kept myself spread too thin with side jobs and contract work to really commit. Then 2020 hit and the world shut down. My weekend side gig and contract work evaporated overnight. I initially panicked, then saw this for what it was: an opportunity. It gave me the space and kick in the rear I needed to finally make my business a success. I hired a business coach (best money I ever spent), built a full time income within a year, and never looked back!

Do you have any recent wins?

One of my biggest wins of this past year has been refining the direction of my practice and stepping more clearly into the next version of myself and my work!

After more than 15 years working in nutrition and functional medicine, I started noticing a consistent pattern across many of the women I support. Every client with gut symptoms complained of brain or nervous system based symptoms, like chronic exhaustion, overwhelm, brain fog, headaches, or ADHD. Conversely, every neuro patient I saw had some type of gut issue - constipation, IBS, heartburn, reflux, or poor absorption of nutrients.

That realization helped me step back and rethink how I talk about my work and how I structure my business. Instead of positioning my practice around individual symptoms or conditions, I’ve begun focusing more clearly on the intersection of brain health, nervous system health, and gut health. This shift has brought a lot more clarity to my messaging and to the way I support clients. It also allows me to address what I believe is one of the biggest challenges people face in the health space today: information overload and decision fatigue.

Refining my focus into neuronutrition and supporting the gut-brain connection feels like a natural evolution of the work I’ve been doing for years, and I feel excited to step into this next chapter with greater clarity and intention!

Who are your customers?

My customers are driven, high performing women who are often successful in their careers, but struggling with health issues that affect their energy, mental clarity, focus, and resilience.

They are often:

  • Executives, entrepreneurs, and business owners
  • Bright and intellectually curious
  • Proactive about health, but overwhelmed by conflicting advice
  • Used to solving problems, but frustrated they can't put together the pieces of their own health puzzle

Common symptoms they experience include:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue or burnout
  • Hormone imbalance (especially as they enter perimenopause)
  • Digestive issues
  • Anxiety or mood swings
  • Difficulty sustaining energy and focus

They often say things like:

  • "I'm doing everything right, but I still don't feel good."
  • "I don't feel like myself. I know something is off, but I can't figure out what it is."
  • "My Doctor said all my labs are normal, but I don't feel normal."

What's your top productivity tip?

Daily routines and lists! These are tools I use to manage my own ADHD and overwhelm, and I teach clients to do the same.

What's your favorite business tool?

Task automation, hands down. I can't tell you the amount of hours I spent on tedious tasks in the beginning stages of business, I'm so grateful for systems that help me automate!

How do you avoid burn-out?

Daily routines are also very important in burnout avoidance. They allow me to look at the big picture of my day without drowning in the details, and also prevent me from "bulldozing" my own boundaries around scheduling. I know where my workouts, client calls, and admin tasks go in my schedule, which allows me to keep more free time and build in self care.

What advice do you have for aspiring Entreprenistas?

Don't be afraid to ask for help. My only regrets around working with coaches or mentors and hiring help is that I didn't do it sooner :)
