Your Reputation Is Talking Before You Do

Hearsay PR

Before you walk into a meeting, your reputation has already arrived.

Before someone books you for a keynote, your reputation has already influenced the decision.

Before a journalist replies to your pitch or a potential client schedules a discovery call, your reputation has already shaped their expectations.

Most founders spend a great deal of time thinking about what they're going to say. Far fewer think about what their reputation has already said for them.

Every Opportunity Starts Before You Do

Many founders believe opportunities are won during the conversation. Sometimes they are.

More often, they're won before the conversation ever begins.

By the time someone agrees to meet with you, they've likely visited your website, looked through your LinkedIn profile, read your content, searched your name, or asked someone they trust what they know about you.

Long before you introduce yourself, people are already forming conclusions.

The question isn't whether they'll form an opinion. It's whether you've intentionally shaped it.

Reputation Is Built in Small Moments

Most founders think of reputation as something that develops over years. In reality, it's built one interaction at a time.

Every podcast interview, keynote, article, social media post, client experience, or introduction someone makes on your behalf.

Individually, these moments may seem small. Collectively, they teach people what to associate with your name.

Over time, those associations become your reputation.

Recognition Creates Confidence

When people clearly understand what you're known for, decisions become easier.

Journalists know when to quote you and event organizers know when to invite you. Clients know when to hire you and colleagues know when to recommend you.

You become the obvious choice instead of one of many options.

Recognition doesn't just make you memorable. It makes you easier to choose.

The Invisible Conversation

One of my favorite questions to ask founders is this, “What would people say about your business if you weren't there to explain it?”

That's the conversation that matters most.

Because it happens every day. Inside boardrooms, in group texts, over coffee, on Zoom calls, and in Slack.

Your reputation is either opening doors in those conversations—or quietly closing them.

Building a Reputation on Purpose

Strong reputations rarely happen by accident.

The founders who become recognized authorities are intentional about what they reinforce, and what they don't.

They understand that every interview, keynote, article, client story, and conversation teaches the market what to associate with their name.

Consistency isn't about saying the exact same thing forever. It's about making sure people know what to expect from you.

The Bigger Picture

Your reputation starts speaking long before you do.

Every interview, keynote, article, client experience, and conversation teaches people what to associate with your name.

Over time, those associations become expectations. And expectations shape opportunities.

That's why recognition matters.

The founders who become impossible to ignore aren't simply the most visible. They're the ones people already trust before the conversation even begins.
