Nicole Lewis-Keeber Turned Trauma Work Into Business Therapy
The business therapist behind the Emotional Operating System on what really drives founders
July 23, 2026
“Your childhood trauma is running your business” is not the kind of sentiment most people expect to hear from a stranger on the internet, and Nicole Lewis-Keeber knows it. She also knows how often it turns out to be true. For years she watched her most successful clients hit the same invisible wall, and none of them could explain why.
Nicole Lewis-Keeber is the founder of Nicole Lewis-Keeber Coaching and Insightful Work, where she works as a business therapist and leadership coach. A member of the Entreprenista League, she trained with Brené Brown's team, has written 2 books, and built every one of her frameworks herself.
The pattern she couldn't unsee
Nicole spent her early career as a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and employee assistance provider, sitting with people through the hardest parts of their lives. She had been trained to recognize how early relationships shape behavior, and by 2015 she started seeing those same patterns show up in her clients' companies, almost word for word.
"I couldn't unsee it, so I built a whole practice around it."
A wrong turn as a money mindset coach
Burnout is what finally pushed her out of direct practice. She stepped back to breathe, worked behind the scenes for a while, and hired a life coach of her own. Sitting in those sessions, she realized she wanted to be on the other side of the conversation.
So she became a coach and started her business helping people with money, because that's where she thought the work was. It took almost no time with real clients to see she was wrong. "People would sit across from me white knuckling their way through a pricing conversation, and I recognized what I was looking at immediately. Once I saw it, I couldn't stop seeing it."
The Emotional Operating System
Today Nicole offers the Emotional Operating System, a framework that helps founders understand what is driving their decisions underneath all the strategy. Her clients tend to look successful from the outside. They have teams, high revenue, and a business that works on paper.
Privately, many of them are exhausted in ways success was supposed to fix and never did. They come to her after hitting the same ceiling for the third time, having done everything right and still unable to figure out why it's not landing.
Frameworks no one handed her
Nicole is proud of being one of the first people to formally study how childhood trauma shows up in entrepreneurship. Additionally, she is proud of not only being selected to train with Brené Brown and her team, but building her frameworks herself. "Nobody handed them to me. I didn't learn them from someone else and repackage them. I did that. I made it."
What's next
This year brought a full slate of keynotes and a rush she still feels every time she is on stage. Nicole was selected to bring her Insightful Leadership trainings into organizations, and her book has now sold more than 1,000 copies with more than 50 five-star reviews from people who read it and felt something. Again and again, she hears, "I wish I had met you 5 years ago, my business would have been so different."
Nicole wants to do more speaking, write another book, and partner with founder incubators so new founders start with an emotional operating system in place. By her own admission she has been one of the best kept secrets in the industry, and she intends to change that.
