6 Best Credit Cards for Mompreneurs

As you navigate life as a busy mom and Entreprenista, you’ll naturally have countless expenses to cover, from office supplies and payroll to childcare fees and groceries. While you can cover them all directly out of your bank accounts, you often won’t get rewarded for doing so. Credit cards, on the other hand, typically come with rewards and benefits that can help you get value in return for all your spending. But which credit cards are best for mompreneurs? You know I love nothing more than sharing all of my favorite solutions with you, so read on for my top 6 picks!

Do You Need Two Separate Cards?

As a mompreneur, your finances are split between two worlds: your business life and your home life. The golden rule is to keep them separate. Doing so keeps your records clean and organized, which simplifies everything.

If your business is structured as a corporation or LLC, the separation of finances is even more important. Mixing personal and business finances could “pierce the corporate veil,” stripping away your liability protection and leaving you personally responsible for business debts.

Long story short, it’s best to have a personal bank account and personal credit card for all your personal expenses, and a business bank account and business credit card for your business expenses. For that reason, I’ve split my recommendations below into business and personal card sections, and do recommend having dedicated cards for each.

3 Best Business Cards for Mompreneurs

When reviewing credit cards, you’ll find everything from no-annual-fee cards to premium cards with annual fees of $700+. To ensure this list can help Entreprenistas in every stage of growth, you’ll find cards across the spectrum.

Ink Business Cash® Credit Card from Chase

Annual fee: $0

The Ink Business Cash Credit Card from Chase is a no-annual-fee card that packs a punch. It offers rewards rates up to 5%, you may earn a $900 cash back bonus when you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first three months, and a 12-month 0% intro APR period on purchases (after which a variable APR of 17.24% to 25.24% applies; welcome offers vary).

You’ll find this card’s rewards pay the most if your business regularly spends in certain areas. More specifically, you can earn 5% on up to $25,000 in purchases at office supply stores and on phone, internet, and cable TV services. Plus, you’ll earn 2% on up to $25,000 in purchases at U.S. gas stations and restaurants.

Capital One Spark Cash

Annual fee: $95, but $0 the first year

The Capital One Spark Cash is a low-cost card that offers a competitive, flat rewards rate for most purchases. You’ll earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One, and 2% cash back on everything else. That means if your business spends $10,000 per month, you may get back $200. Not bad, considering most cards offer 1x rewards on miscellaneous purchases.

You’ll also gain a few valuable perks, including no annual fee for the first year ($95 after that), you may earn a $1,000 cash welcome bonus if you spend $10,000 in the first three months (welcome offers vary), roadside assistance, and no foreign transaction fees. The Spark Cash can be a great fit if your business expenses don’t consistently fall into the high-earning bonus categories of other cards, and if you’ll earn enough cash back to offset the annual fee each year.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express*

*Disclaimer: The Business Platinum Card® from American Express allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all. [Rates and Fees]

Annual fee: $895

The Business Platinum Card from American Express is a top-tier card with all the bells and whistles. It’s a good ally for jet-setting Entreprenistas with expenses in the six-figure range. While it comes with an annual fee of $895, you can earn that and more back from the card’s many perks.

Rewards-wise, you’ll earn 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels you book through AmexTravel.com and 2x points on up to $2 million in purchases per year from:

  • U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers
  • U.S. software and cloud system providers
  • U.S. electronic goods retailers
  • U.S. shipping providers

A flat 1x point rate applies to all other purchases. And if you use Pay with Points to book flights, you may earn 35% of those points back (up to 1 million points per year)!

Beyond rewards, the card offers up to $3,500 in annual value thanks to credits, hotel perks, and airport lounge access. You’ll find statement credits from select partners such as Dell, Adobe, Indeed, CLEAR Plus, and Hilton (enrollment required; terms apply).

3 Best Personal Cards for Mompreneurs

Now let’s switch gears and talk about the best personal cards for mompreneurs. Here are my top picks for cards you can use to make the most of all your personal purchases.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express*
*Disclaimer: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all. [Rates and Fees]

Annual fee: $0

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express is a great option if you’re looking for a no-annual-fee personal card. You can start by earning a nice welcome bonus of $200 if you spend $2,000 in purchases within the first six months. That kick back can help cover a grocery run or a few tanks of gas.

Beyond that, the card rewards you at a 3% rate on the first $6,000 you spend on purchases at each of the following store types: U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retailers, and U.S. gas stations. After you hit the $6,000 annual limit in each area, you’ll earn 1% cash back on the rest of your purchases for the year. You’ll also earn 1% cash back on all your other purchases.

As for benefits, the card highlights include up to $84 per year in Disney streaming statement credits (U.S. only; enrollment required), car rental loss and damage insurance, and exclusive access to events. All in all, the Blue Cash Everyday provides great value for a no-annual-fee personal card.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express*

*Disclaimer: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all. [Rates and Fees]

Annual fee: $95, waived for the first year

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express is a step up from the Blue Cash Everyday Card. While it comes with an annual fee of $95 (waived for the first year), you may get more in return. You may earn a $250 welcome bonus if you spend $3,000 in purchases in the first six months (welcome offers vary).

From there, you can earn 6% cash back on the first $6,000 you spend at U.S. supermarkets per year (up to $360 annually), 6% unlimited on select U.S. streaming subscriptions, 3% unlimited on transit and at U.S. gas stations, and 1% on everything else. So, you’re looking at more earning potential across various common spending categories.

On the benefit front, you may get many of the same benefits as the Blue Cash Everyday Card. However, the Disney streaming credit bumps up to $120 per year (U.S. only; enrollment required), and you may get return protection and extended warranties.

American Express® Gold Card*

*Disclaimer: American Express® Gold Card from American Express allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all. [Rates and Fees]

Annual fee: $325

The American Express Gold Card has a higher annual fee of $325, but the rewards come with more earning potential.

You can earn 4x points on up to $50,000 of purchases per year at restaurants worldwide, along with 4x points on up to $25,000 per year in purchases at U.S. supermarkets. Entreprenistas who travel for personal reasons will also appreciate earning 3x points on flights and 2x points on prepaid hotels, when either are booked through AmExTravel.com. Then, there’s the standard 1x points on all other eligible purchases.

When it comes to benefits, you can get up to $500 in annual statement credits from select U.S. brands like Dunkin’ and Resy (enrollment required; terms apply). These are great if you want to take the family out for donuts on Saturday morning or head to a restaurant after a busy work day. On the travel front, you’ll find no foreign transaction fees, a global assist hotline, baggage insurance, and car rental and loss damage insurance (when you’re eligible and meet coverage requirements).

This card also helps you shop with confidence thanks to the extended warranty offer and purchase protection (up to $50,000 in annual purchases will be protected for up to 90 days if they’re accidentally damaged or stolen). The American Express Gold card can be a great fit for mompreneurs who travel regularly for personal reasons and enjoy a mix of eating in and dining out.

How to Choose the Best Card for Your Mompreneur Lifestyle

With these six cards in mind, how do you find the best fits for you, as you may want a no-annual-fee card for your business but a premium card for your personal life, or vice versa. Here are some tips to help you decide:

  • Estimate your business spend: Calculate the amount you’re spending on business expenses each month. Look back three to six months and find the average. Note the categories in which you’re spending the most (e.g., ads, office supplies, flights, etc.) and how much you’re spending in each.
  • Estimate your personal spend: Calculate how much you’re spending on personal expenses each month. Again, look back three to six months to find the average and note the categories in which you’re spending (e.g., groceries, gas, streaming subscriptions, etc.).
  • Review card rewards and benefits: Review cards and look for those that will reward you best in the categories where you spend the most. Also, consider spending limit reward caps and benefits (e.g., annual credits, purchase protection, travel insurance, etc.).
  • Consider the fee vs benefit: Check the annual fee and run the numbers to predict if the value from the rewards and benefits will allow you to come out ahead overall for years to come.

Ultimately, the goal is to find the cards that offer the highest annual net returns on your spending. If you pick a card with too little value for your situation, you’ll miss out on potential returns and benefits. On the other hand, if you go for a card with too much value for your situation, you could end up spending more without getting enough in return. So, try to find the Goldilocks balance. It can take a bit of number crunching,so block thirty minutes on your calendar to make a plan as it’s worth it to get the most out of all you spend as a mom and Entreprenista!
