Entrepreneurial DNA: Grit, Grace, Gumption, and Gratitude
If someone asked you what it takes to be an entrepreneur, what would you say? Would you list a collection of skills? Talk about financial resources? Point to personality traits, experience, or connections? Perhaps it’s all of the above, or much more. But before we define what it takes, let’s reflect on what it looks like.

A day in the life
As entrepreneurs, we rarely have a constant or even predictable schedule. Sure, we have meetings, engagements, activities, and commitments on the calendar, but no two weeks, and quite often no two days, look alike.
One day, we’re out in the community meeting people, building relationships, generating ideas, and creating opportunities. The next day, we’re tied to our computers, jumping from one virtual meeting to the next. Then, we’re managing vendors, reviewing marketing assets, balancing budgets, improving operations, and so on. The possibilities are endless.
And, of course, there are the inevitable fire drills. Those unexpected issues that seem to appear at precisely the wrong moment. They disrupt our plans, test our patience, and force quick decisions. Yet, those same fire drills sharpen us. They teach us. They strengthen our instincts and prepare us for whatever comes next.
We have no “business hours.” There are no guaranteed weekends. Our schedule is ultimately determined by what we are building, what we are pursuing, and what we are willing to sacrifice to get there.
The emotional toll
The emotions we experience as entrepreneurs are not for the faint of heart. When the business is ours, the highs feel higher, and the lows feel lower. It feels personal because it is personal.
One moment, we are filled with hope and optimism, convinced that we are absolutely meant to do this. We see the possibilities. We envision the future. We are energized by what could be. Then, without warning, it’s as though everything is crashing down around us and we think, “Maybe this isn’t for me. Maybe I’m not cut out for this.”
The wins feel different. When our team wins, when a customer is delighted, when a partner succeeds, or when we see something we imagined actually come to life, it feels amazing! We built it. We believed in it. We took the risk.
And when things go wrong? It can be gut-wrenching. A difficult decision can keep us awake at night. A disappointing result can make us question everything. The stakes are higher. The impact is more powerful. We must be resilient.
The entrepreneurial DNA
Let’s face it. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. For us Entreprenistas, there is something distinctive about how we navigate this world. It’s not simply about what we know or what we can do. It’s about who we are, and I believe our entrepreneurial DNA consists of four powerful qualities:
Grit: The strength to keep going
There will be setbacks, disappointments, mistakes, missed opportunities, unexpected expenses, and lessons we wish we could learn without experiencing them. Grit allows us to forge ahead anyway.
Grace: How we carry ourselves
We treat people with kindness and respect, no matter what.
Gumption: Our spark
It’s different from grit. Gumption gets us moving. Grit keeps us moving.
Gratitude: The grounding force
We are thankful. We appreciate everything and everyone, whether integral to our journey or a momentary blessing.
No one said entrepreneurship would be easy. We know it can be exhilarating, exhausting, rewarding, frustrating, inspiring, terrifying, fulfilling, and occasionally all of those things before lunchtime. But that’s also what makes it so meaningful!
So be proud. Be bold. Be unapologetic about your entrepreneurial DNA.
